Kalyani (Sree Vidya) at the age of 14 give birth to a boy , due to her family situations she put the child in a moving train. A person in the slum finds the child and adapt him to the slum. When he grows up ,Surya(Rajnikanth) doesn’t like the injustice happening around . He raise his voice against it.
Devaraj(Mammooty) is a don in the location he fights against injustice . Ramana his assistant was beaten to death by Surya for doing injustice. Surya was arrested and taken to Jail. Devaraj came to know that surya was correct ,his assistant was wrong. He takes Surya on bail and consider him as his assistant, Thalapathi.
Devaraj main enemy was Kalivardhan. There used to be constant fight between them. New district collector joined in the area named Arjun(Arvind Swami) want to stop these violence happening in the town. Arjun was the second son of Kalyani . She was in search of her lost son . She had married to a police officer .
Kalyani Husband came to know that surya was her son. He informs surya about this and he came and meet Kalyani without her knowledge. Last Kalyani came to know surya is her son. Surya come to meet Kalyani and her husband secretly. Devaraj came to know about it. Devaraj was having a doubt whether surya is planning to arrest him with the help of Arjun. But surya informs Devaraj that Arjun is his brother , he becomes so happy that still surya is supporting him.
Devaraj and Surya plans to shutdown all these violence and surrender to Arjun. On that day Kalivardhan does a shoot out in which Devaraj gets killed . Surya kills all of them and kalivardhan also. Surya surrender to police but was released due to lack of evidence.
